The canals of Amsterdam - Inspiration, contemplation and so much more!

Windmills.  Tulips.  Wooden clogs.  Canals.  Venice of the North.  This is Amsterdam.  Originally founded as a fishing village in 1250, the capital of the Netherlands boasts more than 100 kilometers of canals, 90 islands and 1280 bridges.   In 2010, the three main canals that form a concentric ring around the city were recognized as an UNESCO World Heritage site.

But let me not bore you with paragraph after paragraph of facts galore, dear reader, as you can easily research those yourself.  Having sojourned to Amsterdam numerous times over the past 25 years and then some, the lure of this Dutch city, at least for me, is not the cheese, the history nor even the museums, but is an attraction of an entirely different sort.  The canals.  All 165 of them.  And they’ve stolen my pink-sneaker heart.

Meandering along the cobblestone canal lined rues on a star-lit night, the twinkling and shimmering light dancing seductively on the water is both magical and mesmerizing – beckoning one to pause, reflect and contemplate the night away.

Not to be outdone by such over the top and achingly moving emotion, autumn throws her hat in the wind and offers a descriptive of yet another sort.  A carpet of golden hued leaves lies scattered all about, twirling and swirling in tune with the elements – whether it be a frenzied blow-out hurrah of cyclonic proportions or a lazy, hazy last day of summer elegantly orchestrated descent – a picture perfect postcard of amber, blonde and citron foliage in all of her October delight.

Even torrential downpours and bleak and dreary skies are not cause for despair, as the canals never disappoint, presenting themselves in an entirely different light.  It all depends upon your mindset and what you’re feeling at that particular moment.  Whether sad or glad or mad or not, it feels cathartic to just gaze out over the canals and live in the moment.  Of being there.  A part of history.  In Amsterdam.

A few interesting tidbits of fascinating info:

·       Did you know that there are over 2,500 + houseboats that line the Amsterdam canals?

·       And, that the law requires that the wooden boats have to be re-painted every 3 years?

·       Amsterdam has more bridges than Venice:  1281 versus 409!

·       There are over 900,000 bikes in Amsterdam and up to 15,000 of those bicycles end up being fished out from the canals.  Yikes!  Hopefully one of them is not my bike!!  But then again, I’m usually busy schlepping luggage up and down stairs, so no time for biking except for endless schlepping!

·       On that note – wonder how many pennies and coins are fished out from the canals each year?  Enough for a Chanel, LV or Birkin or two?

·       Swimming in the canals is not recommended as the canals are used as sewage dumps for the houseboats.  Note – the canals are flushed with water from the North Sea three times a week.

Next post – in four weeks!  Wednesday, November 30th!  Stay tuned for the continuation of the adventures of cuckoo ol’ Auntie Nora and sidekick Oz.

Note:  I'm having a bit of a glitch adding in pictures so will add in more pictures just as soon as these tech issues are resolved.  More pics tomorrow (I hope!).

Missed the bus once again! Stranded in Mini Europe.

Map.  What map?  Schedule.  What schedule?

Stranded.  In the middle of nowhere.  Yep.  Again!

The last bus had just departed, leaving Travel Bud and I in quite the quandary and in a bit of a pickle, to say the least.  It’s not like we had just aimlessly wandered out and about, without a clue of an itinerary or detailed agenda.  Nope.  Not us.  We had a plan.  An actual concrete visualization of what our day would be like.

Seriously?  You’ve got to be kidding, right?

Nope.

We were right on schedule.  Up early, we skedaddled out of our hotel and high-tailed it to the waiting red Hop On Hop Off tour bus that would take us to Mini Europe Brussels – an amusement park of a totally different kind.  Showcasing miniaturized model replicas of all of the major European cities and attractions, Mini Europe offered a whirlwind tour of the continent in just under a couple of hours.  Who needs a plane, train or automobile when you can stroll at your leisure from country to country and not worry about missing your connection or having to to schlep cumbersome luggage along the way?

Whee!!  Everything is so close!

No train trip is complete without a view of the castle!

Posing for selfies at iconic landmarks

The Leaning Tower of Pisa, the Eiffel Tower, the Acropolis and Big Ben are just a few of the miniature recreations on display.  An added element of interaction includes the eruption of Vesuvius and the fall of the Berlin Wall.  An amusement park with an educational twist, Mini Europe is a must-see for both old and young alike.

So, there we were.  So engrossed were we in snapping selfies by castles and posing by gondolas and windmills that we inadvertently lost track of time, mesmerized by the wealth of history and architecture on display.  With over 80 cities and 350 monuments so up close and personal to explore - not to mention taking a well deserved break for a vino and lunch - the day galloped on ahead of us and next thing you know we were huffing and puffing and sprinting for the last bus.

Missed the bus. Also missed the tutorial on how to rotate pics. Yikes!

Yikes!!  Really should have looked at the timetable.

That just departed mere minutes ago.

So much for our well thought out plan…

Plan.  What plan?  There’s a plan?

Yikes!!  Now what?

What better way to explore an unfamiliar part of town than by taking routes unknown along uncharted paths made all the more entertaining when you miss the last bus and are now stranded miles from somewhere on the road to nowhere.  All the more challenging if you haven’t a map to guide your way…. Just another day in the travel life of Pink Sneakers on the Go…

Stay tuned!!  Next blog – In four weeks – Wednesday, November 2nd!!

On the path to inspiration or on the road to somewhere but who exactly knows where?

It should be easy, right?  Or, was that Write?  Or should I have instead turned left?  On the road to nowhere and most definitely not to anywhere anytime soon… at least not today and perhaps not even tomorrow…

Stranded.  Yet again!  Do I sense a pattern here?

How does this happen?  Well, perhaps Travel Bud and I should have consulted the timetable of when the last tour bus departed.  But, nah, why bother with such trivialities, when one can instead spend the remainder of the day patiently (Hah!!) waiting for a bus.

After all, each journey is a brand spanking new adventure, with twists and turns and a whole lot of roadblocks and hurdles – that is – if you have the fortune (or was that misfortune?) of pounding the pavement with Pink Sneakers on the Go!

And this is where Write comes in.  Scribbling madly in my journal, of roads not taken and paths still yet to discover, I am in my glory, as each misstep and stumble are just extra fodder for my blog.

Which adventure to document first? The list is endless...

Not my bus!  Still waiting!

On the road to somewhere towards destinations off the map!

There's a map??  To where??

Wait!  Wait for me!!

Inadvertently hopped on the wrong train?  Yippee!!  An unexpected journey far off the beaten path sure makes for some entertaining travel tales!  And oftentimes, definitely worthy of three, if not more, blog posts!

Accidentally disembarked two stops ahead of designated destination?  Double whammy!  An entire series devoted to schlepping cumbersome luggage for weeks on end in abandoned train station.  Somewhere.  But, where?  If only I had a map!

No map?  No guidebook?  No itinerary?  No clue?  No problem!
Just another day in the globetrotting life of cuckoo ol’ Auntie Nora.

Oops!  Forgot to reserve accommodation!  Oh, well.  Just jostle with the pigeons for prime real estate on park benches and you’ve not only scored some cheap and cheerful digs but also a whole lot of insight on how to travel on a budget.  Or, better yet, for free!

Travelling off-season?  Don’t forget to forget your brollie, rain boots, parka and warm clothing.  After all, some of my most memorable moments involve puddle jumping and marathon sprinting in torrential downpours.

Slip sliding in the rain!!

Brollie required to join the party!

I'll take all three!  Gotta be prepared!!

Puddle jumping across a runway in Gibraltar.

You get the picture.  Or not.  Click!

Needless to say, I'm pleased as punch.  Travel Bud.  Not so much.

Come trip and stumble your way across the globe and add that extra level of adventure as you sojourn without a map, let alone without a clue as to how to get from Point A to Point B.  Just a glimpse into a typical day on the road with the Clueless Duo…

Next blog – In three weeks!!  What next??  Stay tuned!!  Wednesday, October 5th!!
